A pupil in a West Lothian history class calls out: “Sur, where did the Munich putsch take place?”
The teacher immediately grasps for a familiar context. “You like football, don’t you, Willie? Where do Bayern Munich play?”
Silence.
“Come on Willie, Bayern Munich, that’s Bayern Munich. Where do they play?”
“Uhm . . . Germany?”
“Quite right, but where?”
“Errrr . . . Munich?”
“Terrific Willie! Spot on!”
A longer silence.
“So sur, where did the Munich putsch take place?”.
The last sound heard was of the teacher’s head repeatedly connecting with the classroom wall.
