East Brighton college of media arts this week became the first Fresh Start school in the country formally to be judged failing by Her Majesty’s Inspectors.
Inspectors visited the former Marina high school in April. They found that pupils made satisfactory progress in only just over half of lessons, a third of teaching was unsatisfactory, staff moralewas low and pupil behaviour poor.
They criticised the leadership of former principal Tony Garwood, who has since resigned.
In a statement, the college said it “has taken action to make improvements in the key areas of leadership and management; raising standards; improving behaviour; staff recruitment and raising attendance”.
