THE European Year of Languages (EYL) is now getting into its stride. Here is just a small slice of some very wide-ranging action.

The European Theatre Company is touring nation-wide until May with a bilingual, interactive comedy for four actors, A Votre Sante, which targets Years 7, 8 and 9.

The company also presents bilingual drama workshops for all levels on request, with prices subsidised by the Royal Bank of Scotland. Contact Jennie Graham, tel: 020 8544 1994.

The Spanish Embassy has sent out an exhibition to tour major cities until the end of the year. Contact Marta Gutierrez, tel: 020 7243 020 7594 4031.

Science Across Europe provides a forum for students to exchange information - this year on biodiversity and other topics - in all five major European languages and Portuguese. Contact Karen Shoebottom, Association for Science Education, tel: 01707 283000.

If you ant expand language horizons in your school, note the Subject Language Teaching Project, organised by Anne-Karine L’Escarmoutier at the French Embassy, tel: 0207 838 2064.

Two national events with a strong European Year of Languages component are The Education Show on March 22-24 at the NEC in Birmingham. Contact Barbara Brookes, tel: 020 8445 1757, and the A-Level Conference and Languages Exhibition, at the University of Westminster on July 7, organised by CILT, tel: 020 7379 5101, extension 231.

In the area of community languages, there is an important development this year with the addition of Bengali, Urdu and Gujurati to the list of Examinations for International Communication. Contact the Institute of Linguists, tel: 020 7940 3109.
