Your job and career questions answered
I work part-time so that I can pursue my writing career. I teach adults English and basic skills. I would be interested in teaching English literature in prisons. How do I go about finding out whether there is a post available in my area?
There is no central database of such jobs. Sometimes they are advertised in ‘The TES’, both in the main jobs section and in ‘FE Focus’. However, your first step should be to consider whether you are prepared to move to a different area if a job is available. Otherwise, consider what prisons and young offenders’ institutions are within travelling distance , and then find out who provides their education courses. Don’t forget: changing your type of teaching will be stressful, and could have an impact on your writing; it could also give you some new insights. Weigh up the pros and cons and decide what is really motivating you.
