I support the Government’s strategy for preventing violent extremists and its toolkit for schools (“Can you spot the ‘terrorist’ in your classroom”, TES Magazine, February 19).
As teachers, we have a moral responsibility to identify and discourage those vulnerable to extremist organisations like the British National Party or Hizb ut-Tahrir.
In addition to forging links with the local community, pupils need a broader perspective. I have found that organising sixth-form trips to the theatre and ballet, or scientific and political discussions, can enable students to appreciate the pluralistic side of British society that the fanatics would rather they didn’t see.
