PRE-FIVE workers have gone Dutch to crack a global problem in the Sighthill area of Glasgow, home to the families of asylum-seekers, John Cairney writes.
A 12-week training programme for 20 staff from the independent and local authority sectors was sparked by a visit to Amsterdam by Alice Sharp of the Scottish Independent Nurseries Association (SINA), where the Dutch faced similar difficulties of integration.
Specialists trained the Glasgow staff in music, drama and child psychology, aimed at greater understanding of people from other cultures. The programme was based on material from the British Refugee Council and the Save the Children Fund and was backed by the North Glasgow Partnership.
