THE GENERAL Teaching Council will be nothing but the Government’s glove puppet, unless teachers are given a greater role, according to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.
The GTC, the professional body for teachers, will be established next year. It will be made up of 64 members, 34 of them teachers.
Peter Smith, ATL general secretary, said: “The Government is trying to pass off a quango of its own creation as an authoritative professional body. It will become a glove puppet - a Sooty’s consortium and will command cynicism rather than support.”
