ITALY: Headteachers are to get a pay rise of an average 1.3 million lire (pound;430) per month under a new contract that radically redefines their roles. But the pound;5,160 rise will only take salaries to pound;23,000.
Heads will no longer have jobs for life. They will be offered contracts for two to seven years, which can be rescinded if the education authorities consider they are not doing their job properly. Salaries will no longer be based on length of service, but on school size and educational achievement. Heads will now control their own budget, though the education ministry will continue to pay salaries.
