ICT ACTIVITIES FOR KEY STAGE 3 ENGLISH. By Geoff Barton. Heinemann pound;69.99

This pack with CD-Rom aims to fill a glaring gap in the market. Many English teachers are keen to use ICT to improve students’ writing in English, but until now there has been little structured guidance on how to do this. This resource adopts the dual approach of photo-copiable worksheets supported by a CD-Rom stuffed with images, sounds and text templates. The pack provides material for work at three levels: creating; transforming; and reading. Activities are challenging and contemporary.

The author is a practising English teacher and it hows. Writing tasks are supported by images, web links and even sound files on the CD. The only drawback is the layout of the print materials which lacks any illustration and is a bit text heavy. That said, the structure is clear with each activity containing extra guidance for evaluation and extension. The CD is an extensive storehouse of activities and support materials. In addition to an activities section and a resource bank with useful web links, there is a skills base section which allows staff to explore a variety of software. A companion volume aimed at KS4 is also about to be launched.
