The Roehampton Institute in south- west London, the country’s largest provider of primary teacher training, has been given top marks by the Office for Standards in Education.

Roehampton’s training and the work done in its partner schools, were judged “very good” in maths, English and assessment. Quality assurance procedures were judged “good”.

OFSTED is inspecting the whole of primary teacher training and giving the results to the new Teacher Training Agency, which distributes government funds. The TTA has to take quality of courses into account.

OFSTED has already inspected secondary training and, again, gave Roehampton a “very good”. The team of HM inspectors who visited the institute commented in particular on the skill of its students in the teaching of reading.
