It will soon be time to put the kettle on in a West Yorkshire street, as residents play host to some very unusual visitors.

Moorview Way in Skipton, near Bradford, has been chosen as the suburban setting for a government-inspired publicity event aimed at encouraging people to boost their everyday skills by signing up for a course with a college or private training provider.

If the prospect of exposing their wobbly shelving and poor household budgeting to a group of officials is a bit daunting, the exercise comes with a sweetener in the shape of Carol Smillie, the television presenter.

Ms Smillie will be joining the Learning and Skills Council team as it knocks on doors tomorrow.

Under the “Skills Street” event, residents will also be shown the range of training options they might take that could count towards recognised qualifications - including apprenticeships. They will be given information about adult learning grants.
