The average state secondary pupil learns just 0.6 foreign languages, a European Union study says. This put the UK last among the EU’s 27 member states, where pupils learn an average of 1.4 foreign languages. Young people in the Netherlands and Luxemburg were most likely to be multilingual, learning an average of 2.6 each.
The data for the Eurostat survey was gathered from 2004, the year the Government allowed pupils to drop languages at 14.
