This is a very good idea: the Internet on a CD-Rom. Here is a disc-based tutorial which provides an Internet environment without the on-line cost, modems, subscriptions and, it must be admitted, many of the frustrations to be found on the real thing.

There are hundreds of World Wide Web pages, descriptions of all the major pieces of software available on the Internet and many items to download from the CD. All the time it is in use, it behaves as though you are actually on-line.

The whole pack is not aimed at the education market, but schools would certainly benefit as it will more than save them the price of the package by short-circuiting learning time. It takes the average learner months - and hours of on-line time - to acquire the kind of knowledge and software that is already here on CD-Rom.

Also included in the package is an hour-long video which gives an overview of areas like mail searching and choosing a provider.

The presentation is attractive and informed and makes the disc accessible to new users.

It also makes it possible to subscribe to IBM Internet Connection, but you would be better advised to go with one of the recognised providers for education.

When you eventually get on-line, you can still use this disc because it contains many addresses that will help to propel you painlessly into the Internet.

This is an excellent, cost-effective introduction to the Internet.
