May I congratulate Reva Klein for her article on travelling children’s education (TES, May 23)? I have a showman’s ancestry, and am now able to contribute in a positive way to forwarding this aspect of modern-day education through my work with the Office for Standards in Education as a lay inspector.
There are examples of very positive work being done with travellers in Essex and Kent, with traveller education units and education welfare officers, which does not always get the full recognition it deserves in OFSTED reports.
In addition, we are fortunate to have supporters such as an HMI (Arthur Watts) and Dr Thomas Acton, who keep traveller education alive and progressive, as well as educating those non-believers. Long may it continue.
