The Deeper Magic, a half-hour programme to be repeated on New Year’s Day, will be introduced by poet Michael Rosen. It will feature 22 poems by children and teenagers including Tania Colley’s “Make Me...” which begins “I am a glowing star, make me the silver planetI am a dirty rag, make me the red carpet”.
Tania’s poem was first published in the weekly TES Young Poet slot from which poems for The TES book were chosen. Earlier this year, Tania, who attends Garibaldi School in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and was then 13 said: “The poem just came into my head. It’s about something small that wants to be big.” Its last line is: “I am a shivering small girl, make me the powerful giant”.
Cliff Yates, who teaches at the Maharishi School in Ormskirk, Lancashire, and has three of his students represented in the book says: “People tend to assume that children’s poetry is only valuable in an educational context, but they can write way beyond what is normally expected and can speak with great authority. They write about things close to them and it takes off because of their energy and power. It is good to give young people’s work status.”
The other poems chosen from The TES Book of Young Poets include “The Two Azizas” by Aziza Hussein, written when she was nine and attending primary school in London. She was still missing Somalia. It ends: “Aziza never goes on holidayBut the other AzizaGoes to Somalia every weekend”.
The TES Book of Young Poets contains 27 poems and an introduction for teachers by Sian Hughes of the Poetry Society. Among the well-known poets who contribute comments are Michael Rosen, Ann Sansom and Kate Clanchy. A TES Young Poet is published every week in Friday.
