Nicholas Souter, a senior lecturer in curricular studies at Strathclyde University, looked into 69 applications received by the university in 2004-05, from which 25 offers were made. Of 25 males, only six (24 per cent) were offered places, compared with 19 of the 44 females (43 per cent); female applicants tended to be better prepared for interviews.
Mr Souter carried out his research after frequently fielding questions from candidates disappointed by their failure to gain a place on the Strathclyde course. This reflects national trends where biology applicants significantly outnumber places.
