* Use this topic as the basis for a cross-curricular theme. Research carried out by pupils in other subjects, such as geography, can be used for graphical displays and analyses. For example, an investigation of factors contributing to the price of produce from the developing world (labour, transport, producer profit, retail costs, taxation, supermarket profit), compared with produce grown in the developed world. This analysis would involve Ma4, Handling Data (to process, represent and interpret the data and draw conclusions), and Ma2, Number and Algebra, especially percentages, ratio and proportion. This could be a suitable task for pupils at KS34.

* Workers in some plantations are paid 40p per hour. Is it meaningful to compare pay rates in a developing country with those in the UK? Comparison of wages and living costs in developing and developed countries could make a rich topic for Ma4.
