Maths Inspiration Autumn 2011 Criterion Theatre, London, 7 22 November (9.45am-12.30pm, 1.00-3.45pm) Maths Inspiration is a chance for sixth-formers and Year 11s to hear the UK’s most motivating maths speakers live, in big venues, presenting mathematics in the context of real-world and often fun situations. The first show in 2003 attracted 300 pupils and teachers; by 200910, the numbers had grown to 12,000. Event organisers prefer to call the talks “shows” rather than “lectures”. They are lively and entertaining, with three speakers giving interactive talks on a diverse range of topics. In the line-up this year are The Maths of the Rock Guitar by Mark Lewney, How Maths Built the Olympic Stadium by Paul Shepherd and The Maths of TV Gameshows by Rob Eastaway. In keeping with the previous year’s format there will also be a Qamp;A session at the end of each show. The content is ideal for sixth-formers and for interested Year 11s (a lot of the content will be beyond most Year 10s). For more information contact mail@mathsinspiration.com.
