I am a science department head, and I chose teaching to contribute to society. But I took the cripplingly low pay (compared with friends who have similar or lower qualifications) partly in return for the reward of a promised generous pension scheme and good holidays.
I have learned that they are not good holidays, because I cannot take them when I want or need them. I have never been to the Glastonbury festival or seen a test series of cricket. I have had to miss friends’ weddings and their funerals. Holidays are always expensive, and taken at a time when destinations are heavingly busy.
Today, I have learned that I will take home less pay each month and in return have a smaller pension.
I will not tolerate the Government’s bullying change to my working conditions any more. Where do I sign on?
