The government has announced that the new model music curriculum will be drafted by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

In a tweet yesterday, Nick Gibb, schools minister, said that ABRSM had "won a competitive process to draft the new non-statutory Model Music Curriculum".

He added: "Drawing on ABRSM’s expertise and its team of education professionals, and steered by our expert panel, this will be an important resource for schools."

The panel overseeing the new model music curriculum was announced in January, but the plans to produce a supplementary curriculum were described as “deeply concerning” by experts who said that the panel did not include people with sufficient knowledge of how to teach music.

And reactions to schools minister Nick Gibb’s announcement that ABRSM will be drafting the curriculum have raised similar concerns.

A DfE spokesperson said: “ABRSM were contracted to draft the model music curriculum following a competitive procurement process, involving a number of organisations with music expertise. They will take direction from an independent expert advisory group whose work will be informed through consultation with practitioners and other music groups.”
