Kathleen Marshall, our children’s commissioner, tends to go down well with her clientele, or children as they are called. In fact, she was pre-interviewed by some for her top post and still finds time to speak to kids whenever she can - part of the brief, apparently.
She found herself recently with yet another group. Up came the first question, the usual one that young people ask when faced with an ageing person sporting a children’s title: “How old are you?”
“Half a hundred,” replied the commissioner, rather tantalisingly.
Next question, redolent of a teenage phone-in: “Do you have a boyfriend?”
We’re still waiting for the answer to that one.
