Chris Drage takes a look at the new version of IEPWriter

IEP Writer has proven itself over the past three years and has become a popular tool for special needs co-ordinators (Sencos) and teachers in mainstream and special schools. The reasons for its success are quite clear: it’s easy to use and it creates detailed, professional individual education plans quickly. In response to requests and comments from the schools and LEAs that use the program, Learn How Publications has now brought out a new, enhanced version - IEP Writer 2.

Like its predecessor, the software is very straightforward to use, even for teachers who have little experience in using computers. All the user has to do is fill in the student’s details, select from more than 2,000 targets, click the mouse and a complete, detailed individual education plan (IEP) will appear.

All of the information that needs to be included on an IEP is provided, including relevant achievement criteria and suggested strategies for support. Parentcarer and student contributions are also catered for.

IEP Writer 2 is easy to adapt. You can tailor each IEP to the needs of the individual student by customising the template and amending or adding extra targets as needed. With the new version teachers can now include more information on the IEP if they wish, produce a detailed review sheet, and customise the layout and content of the IEP more easily. Its network support has also been enhanced.

IEP Writer 2 can be used for individual or group education plans and is suitable for use with students of all ages from nursery to 16+. It is compatible with the national curriculum, national literacy and numeracy strategies and Scottish national guidelines.

Up to five subject databases are currently provided from which you can purchase: basicearly level targets; literacy; maths; behaviourpersonal, social and health education (PSHE); communication skills (written by teachers and speech and language therapists).

Overall, IEP Writer 2 allows teachers to exercise professional judgement, provide assistance in developing a substantial IEP and save valuable time.
