More than 2,000 people have signed a petition claiming that an A-level biology exam taken yesterday was “unfair”.

The petition, signed by 2,069 people, says the Edexcel A2 biology exam covered hardly any of the content from the exam specification.

Instead it was “filled with AS knowledge that students were not informed was needed”, the petition claims.

University places ‘jeopardised’

“Thousands of A2 students’ acceptance into their chosen universities depend[s] on the grade achieved on this unfair paper,” it says.

“We want Edexcel to accept the mistakes made on the publishing of this paper and lower the grade boundaries.”

But Pearson, which runs the Edexcel board, defended the paper. “Our exam papers accurately reflect the curriculum that schools, teachers and learners have been working towards. In the case of the unit 4 biology paper the specification is clear that some content may draw on AS material as the assessment is synoptic. The synoptic assessment accounts for less than a quarter of the marks available,” a spokesman said.

Pupils have reacted angrily on Twitter, saying they are now concerned about another A-level paper to be taken next week.

Seems sensible to revise AS instead of A2 for next week’s #edexcelbiology

Unit 5 bio next week, what am I revising right now? Units 1, 2 and 4 because I have no trust in edexcel anymore #edexcelbiology

Still fuming imaging revising unit 4 for a year for your paper to ask a load of unit 2- We proved we could do that in AS? #edexcelbiology

So should I bother with unit 5? Or should I revise unit 1? maybe GCSE? Why not add in some yr 6 SATS as well. #edexcelbiology
