The Office for Standards in Education has awarded the top grades to primary teacher training courses at London University’s Institute of Education, writes Nicholas Pyke.
The four areas inspected, mathematics, English, assessment, and quality assurance were all judged “very good”, the highest OFSTED grade. This was part of a “sweep” covering all primary training.
The chief inspector, Chris Woodhead, has had a number of run-ins with the institute, which has sometimes been associated with non-traditional teaching methods.
Professor Peter Mortimore, director of the institute, said: “We are very positive about inspection and delighted with these results. But we don’t think it’s at all reasonable to visit us again within just a few months of the first inspection.”
