Children in English-language primary schools were able to move to Welsh-medium secondaries after taking part in intensive language courses piloted last year. Inspection agency Estyn says nearly 400 10 and 11-year-olds made significant gains in their language skills as a result of the 13 Welsh immersion schemes, based in clusters of schools in seven local education authorities in 2004 and 2005. Other schools and pupils would benefit from similar schemes, designed to give older children a chance to get into Welsh-medium education, says Estyn.
