The Assembly government this week refused to fully fund a new pound;45 fee proposed for compulsory membership of the General Teaching Council for Wales. Phil Dixon, director of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers Cymru, hit out at the government after it announced it would only reimburse pound;33, leaving local authorities to pick up the tab or dock teachers’ pay. “Upping the fee to pound;45 will raise about pound;350,000, a tiny amount out of the Assembly’s budget,” said Dr. Dixon.
