As well as a rich base for studying the ethical issues involved, there is even a rare conjunction of technology and RE in this article. Both subjects offer space to explore: Why do people value things? Why do people now value “antiquity”? Are some things so precious that like the air we breathe, it is crazy to think that an individual or even a nation can “own” them? Schools have to provide for the “spiritual, moral, social and cultural development” of their pupils, giving an opportunity to address changing cultural understanding. And since young people often have to live with being collectively blamed for “vandalism”, here is an opportunity for them to engage with issues of cultural vandalism for which, sadly, many more examples could be found.
