The number of reviews challenging GCSE marks increased by 4 per cent in 2018, according to new figures from Ofqual.

This morning the exam regulator published information on reviews of marking and moderation for GCSEs, AS and A levels taken this summer.

According to the figures, at GCSE 442,540 reviews were requested - an increase of 4 per cent on the 425,075 reviews in 2017.

AS and A level: Fewer reviews requested

However, because more than one review can be requested for an individual qualification, the actual number of GCSE grades being challenged decreased slightly on last year.

In 2018 5.5 per cent of all GCSE grades awarded were challenged, with 1.1 per cent of grades subsequently changed. This compares with 5.9 per cent and 1.4 per cent respectively in 2017.

At GCE (AS and A level), there were 89,060 reviews requested in 2018 - a drop of 7 per cent compared with the 95,845 reviews in 2017.

Ofqual said this reflected changes in entries, which were down 25 per cent at GCE, mainly due to a drop in AS entries since the qualification was decoupled from A level.

At GCE, 5.6 per cent of all grades awarded were challenged, and 1.2 per cent of grades awarded were changed (up from 4.6 per cent and 1 per cent respectively in 2017).
