MacAulay could not resist recalling that the independent Kilgraston school for girls in Perthshire, one of the finalists, was the only school he was ever thrown out of, for reasons delicately left unsaid. According to the citation, the school “encourages open-mindedness” in its pupils.
“Not in the 1970s it didn’t,” said Fred. Actually, he was careful to add:
“There was nothing wrong with the pupils; it was the teachers that were the problem.”
