ROME THE ETERNAL CITY. CD-Rom pound;30; full site licence pound;200. J-Progs, 81 High Street, Pitsford, Northants NN6 9AD. Telfax: 01604 880119; website: www.j-progs.com.

Ah, Rome! I threw three coins in the Trevi fountain and sure enough the very next year I was back. Mind you, that was with the annual school trip, so maybe it doesn’t quite count. But if you are still waiting for that return trip you always promised yourself, you could do a lot worse than give yourself or your pupils a virtual tour of the Eternal City with this absorbing and sumptuous CD-Rom.

It’s a well arranged gallery of striking images of monuments, from the famous sites of Imperial Rome to the modern day, including a good spread on Rome’s fountains and a fine collection of images of Rome’s baroque churches, though it’s a shame not to have more on the fascist era.

From an easy-to-navigate menu you can summon images either from pictures or from maps, although a lack of labelling makes this something of a mystery tour. You can move up and down important monuments such as Trajan’s Column, homing in on important details.

There’s also a timeline with busts of famous Romans. Each image comes with just the right amount of text, so you never feel that you might as well have gone out and bought a book. Ideal for projects. Or for planning that return trip.
