The proportion of schools open to vulnerable pupils and children of key workers fell to just over 50 per cent during the half-term break.

And the number of teachers working in schools also significantly decreased - from 125,000 on 21 May to 64,000 on 28 May.

New data from the Department for Education shows that 52 per cent of education settings were open on 28 May, compared with 80 per cent on 21 May.

The attendance rate among pupils in partially opened schools was around 1.2 per cent, compared with 2.6 per cent the previous week.

Approximately 115,000 children attended a school on 28 May, representing 1.2 per cent of pupils who normally attend. This represented a decrease from 21 May, when around 244,000 (2.6 per cent) were in attendance.

The response rate to the survey of schools and other education settings was also lower - 33 per cent on 28 May compared with 70 per cent typically.

Data indicating the number of pupils attending schools on the week commencing 1 June will be released next Tuesday.
