Mike Tomlinson should be congratulated on his sensible prescription for A-levels, which echoes what teacher unions were saying 15 years ago, when four officially endorsed the principle of the four-term year.
The essential point about the proposed reforms being advocated then has not changed: terms of a roughly uniform and predictable length.
Among the benefits would be the opportunity to alter the timetable for university applications and admission, so that candidates would have their A-level results prior to finalising their applications.
