If you missed last year’s Royal Institute Christmas Lectures, you can catch up with them in a new booklet from 4Learning. The lectures are aimed at 12 to 16-year-olds and the most recent ones, called Smart Stuff, were hosted by Tony Levy, professor of physical chemistry at Sheffield University.
Smart Stuff, the book, features the best bits of the lectures which provided an entertaining gallop through the chemistry of the modern world.
Catchy chapters such as “The spider that spun a suspension bridge” and the “Ice cream that will freeze granny” explain science and technology in an engaging and accessible way. The 101 decisions that go into sports shoe design, artificial skin, ice cream antifreeze and sticking plasters are just a few of the subjects explored. The booklet costs pound;5.50 and is available from 4Learning, PO Box 400, Wetherby LS23 7LG. A set of five videos of the lectures (pound;19.99 each) is also available.
