WINDRUSH. BBC Education Online www.bbc.coukeducation
Fifty years after the arrival of the Empire Windrush (see The Big Picture, page 18), the BBC is celebrating the event, and half a century of black British life, with a season of TV and radio programmes - and this Web site, which goes live today.
The site not only tells the story of this great physical and emotional voyage, but provides a starting point for anyone who wants to learn more about the history of the black British community.
Journalist Mike Phillips provides social, political and cultural contexts. And audio clips include reminiscences of passengers. An “interactive timeline” chronicles black Britons’ contribution to the economic, cultural and spiritual wealth of the nation.
There are masses of images, a calendar of events, and an area for visitors to leave comments.
