In the early years, education and learning are hard to distinguish. Babies are born learners. Their first educators are parents. As young children begin to participate in group care, education enhances the learning that has already started: language, number skills, and knowledge of the world around them. But it also is key to their operating in a social environment; learning to share, to respect diversity, and to operate independently from their parents. The early years are also a time when education is probably most often intensely pleasurable.
