So, what is education for?

Education is to prepare you for life. It is a changing dynamic because life is a changing dynamic, so it might be different in one set of circumstances and countries than in another. However, it is certainly there to give a basic set of values - honesty, peace, selflessness - that transcend individual countries.

Education should teach young people how to understand risk. If it fails to do that then there will be a nasty shock when they come into the world, because there are 1.3 billion risk takers in China, another billion in India, 280 million in America, who are basically going to say ‘Tell you what, I’ll have your lunch’.

Education has to equip people for a competitive world. Sports days that you can’t lose and exams that you can’t fail do not equip people - because the world is competitive.
