The erratic attendance of senior students (as we now have to call, if not regard, them) had prompted a management crackdown. Following sightings of a homeward-bound Year 11 boy, and a quick check of the classes he was supposed to be attending, the secretary phoned his home.

The voice on the other end explained that yes, Ian had come home - he was feeling a little unwell. But the secretary knew Ian well, and pursued:

“Ian, is that you Ian?” “No,” said the voice, “it’s my dad.”
