We cannot predict when we might be called on to cope with bereavement (“It’s all right to cry”, Professional, 7 June) and often families expect school staff to advise students dealing with grief. Schools must therefore ensure that staff are trained, and your resources links are very welcome. The Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) works with Winston’s Wish, a charity that supports bereaved families and provides excellent training for principals and teachers. Teachers need to feel equipped to deal with this important issue and to feel confident that they know how to speak to children about loss.

Julie Robinson, Education and training director, IAPS.
