It was heartbreaking to read about disruption in primary schools. But not surprising, given the burden of accountability borne by teachers and students, which inevitably leads to stress.
That stress has extended into early-years foundation stage with its imposition of early literacy and 62 compulsory learning goals. It has also driven out of the profession thousands of carers unprepared to enforce its demands.
It could have been done so differently, creating a safe haven for children from the life pressures burdening their parents, building a solid foundation of social and pre-literacy skills and developing imagination. When will the Government understand that children are not machines?
