A leader for the new agency set up to develop research, training and consultancy work for further education and training was appointed this week.

John Stone, principal of Hammersmith, Ealing and West London college, is to become the first chief executive of the Learning and Skills Network.

He beat off intense competition from more than 50 applicants to land the post, and was selected from a shortlist of five “closely matched”

candidates.

The LSN will become an offshoot of the Learning and Skills Development Agency which splits into two separate organisations next April.

The other part is the Quality Improvement Agency for Lifelong Learning, which will continue the LSDA’s policy and strategic work focusing on quality improvement in the sector.

The 54-year-old father of two said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to make a major contribution to post-16 education and training.”
