Two in three eligible schools were open to pupils in at least one priority year group last week, new figures show.

And the estimated attendance rate in open schools continued to be highest among Year 6 pupils (39 per cent), followed by children in Reception (32 per cent) and Year 1 (29 per cent), according to data released today by the Department for Education (DfE).

New figures show two in three schools (67 per cent) usually open to children in nursery, Reception, Year 1 or Year 6 welcomed back more pupils in at least one of the priority year groups on Thursday 11 June, up from 52 per cent the previous week.

These children were cared for by 200,000 teachers and teaching assistants and 280,000 non-teaching staff, up from 183,000 and 238,000 respectively on 4 June. 

The DfE estimates that 92 per cent of schools were open in some capacity on 11 June, up from 91 per cent the previous week.

And approximately 9.1 per cent of pupils (868,000) attended schools in England on that date, compared to 6.9 per cent on 4 June.
