The schools programme will deliver learning resources exploring the historical significance of the union and a programme of learning activities looking at that history and the architectural expression of democratic decision-making, designed to support A Curriculum for Excellence.
Workshops for senior secondary school pupils are being held on March 13, 15 and 20, as part of the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament. The four half-day workshops for S3-S6 pupils and the teams which qualify for the regional finals will address the history and the architectural impact of governance and democracy. Pupils in P5-P7 can attend six workshops in Aberdeen on May 28-29, June 4-5, and June 11-12.
Each day will include:
* an architectural trail of key Aberdeen buildings to encourage an appreciation of the architecture of local government;
* a historical workshop based on primary sources of evidence to explain 1706-7, with object handling to explain coinage, flags and heraldry;
* a tour of the Tolbooth;
* a visit to the Council Chamber to see how local government operates today.
Workshops on similar themes will be held in Edinburgh from September-November, dates to be confirmed.
