Edinburgh pupils have trialled a new web service, My World of Work, which is being developed to help people plan and control their career.

The service was tested by pupils at Craigmount High, where skills minister Angela Constance launched the Scottish Government’s career information, advice and guidance strategy last month.

The strategy sets out the Government’s ambitions for an all-age, universal careers service, and emphasises how new technology can be used to provide career guidance when and where it is needed.

Ms Constance said My World of Work would be relevant for both young people and professionals.

Craigmount High headteacher John Campbell said that at a time of great anxiety about job prospects, the service would help young people find a rewarding career.

“Craigmount keeps a keen eye on the careers landscape and is very aware of the increasing levels of sophistication demanded by employers,” he said. “The CV builder is an excellent tool to help pupils meet these demands.”

Academic pupils were well provided for in terms of information on next steps, he said, but those wanting to enter a trade less so. He hopes the service will fill that gap.

My World of Work is being developed by Skills Development Scotland. Pending feedback from the trial over the spring and summer, it will be launched for the new academic year.
