Two new teacher development qualifications will be launched specialising in subject leadership and behaviour management, it has been revealed.
Education secretary Gavin Williamson announced these new qualifications for teachers at the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) annual conference today.
Mr Williamson told headteachers that he was aware that experienced teachers who do not want to lead their own school are “often overlooked”.

He said: “That is why we are creating a new specialist National Professional Qualification in Teacher Development for teachers with responsibility for supporting the training and development of others, including early-career teachers.”
The education secretary added: “Today, I can announce that we will launch two further specialist qualifications.
“One will be to train and develop teachers who are subject leads or responsible for improving teaching practice in a subject or phase.
“The other will be for those whose role includes ensuring schools are calm and orderly places, by focusing on behaviour management and pupil wellbeing.”
Behaviour management and subject leadership are both at the forefront of education policy at present.
Last month, the Department for Education revealed that it was seeking to recruit 20 schools with “exemplary behaviour records” in order to help around 500 other schools that are struggling with behaviour management.
Subject leadership has become a key aspect of Ofsted’s new inspection framework.
The inspectorate’s focus on the curriculum under its new framework involves Ofsted carrying out deep dives into the particular subjects in order to assess the quality of the school curriculum as part of the new quality of education grade.
This has meant an increased role during the inspection for teachers in schools who are subject leaders.
