Britain’s trade unions have joined with London Metropolitan University and pensioners’ organisations to remember and celebrate the selfless contribution of workers on the Home Front during the Second World War. A new online resource, The Workers’ War: Home Front Recalled, will be launched on March 13. It illustrates and archives the experiences of working men and women as firefighters and rescue workers, miners and factory workers, as well as the impact on women’s lives and the difficulties of the post-war reconstruction period. As well as hundreds of digitised photographs, posters and documents, the website contains dozens of oral history interviews, documenting experiences and reminiscences.
Audio clips from each of the interviews are accessible on the site along with a fully searchable transcript. Teachers’ notes are provided.
