Tes News Podcast 5 February: Reopening Schools & Coronavirus Safety

Join the Tes news team as we ask: when will it be safe to start reopening schools more fully?

We look at scientific advice warning that schools are “nowhere near” safe to reopen at the moment, while another leading scientist says schools in two areas of England could actually reopen more widely now due to lowering infection rates.

We also look at proposals for a “traffic light” system to be used for schools to reopen, and also at what specific measures teachers want to see when schools start reopening more fully.

A Tes survey shows that most staff think attendance rotas should be used when all pupils return and most teachers think masks should be worn by everyone in classrooms.

Breaking news this week included the appointment of Sir Kevan Collins as the government’s new education recovery commissioner, and we look at the challenge that lies ahead for him, including recent research on how far pupils have fallen behind during lockdown.

And finally, we discuss a special message of support to teachers during the pandemic from the Duchess of Cambridge.
