A teaching union called off its plans for a one-day strike in three Glasgow secondaries. NASUWT Scotland planned to strike in the Glasgow schools this week and three East Dunbartonshire secondaries next week in response to changes to pensions, workload, and pay. However, it said Glasgow City Council had threatened “undefined” legal action and it did not wish to inflict “protracted legal proceedings” on its members.

Scottish pupils do better than average when it comes to working in a group to solve problems, but they are outperformed by English students, research shows. This week the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) published results of its collaborative problem-solving tests for 15-year-olds. Scotland scored 513, similar to the UK (519) and Northern Ireland (514), above Wales (496) and the average (500), but below England (521).

People are likely to hold positive views of young people as trustworthy and helpful, new research from the Scottish government shows. However, a quarter viewed young people as lazy, more than a third saw them as irresponsible and almost four in 10 thought they lacked communication skills. The survey asked more than 1,000 adults what they thought of 13-19 year olds (bit.ly/AttitudesYoung).

Scotland’s further education and university students could soon be entitled to a minimum student income of £8,100, if recommendations of a review of student support published this week are implemented. The review board’s report recommends implementing a common student support funding system across further and higher education.
