Mr Hurn was appointed as Head Teacher at Cardinal Hume Catholic School in Gateshead in 2005 and became CEO of The Trinity Catholic MAT in 2017 which was reformed by the Diocese into the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust in 2019.
As well as being Head Teacher at Cardinal Hume he was also Executive Head Teacher at St Robert of Newminster in Sunderland between 2013 and 2015. Prior to this he was Executive Head Teacher at St Wilfrid’s RC College in South Tyneside between 2010 and 2013 taking the school out of Special Measures to ‘Good’ within 12 months.
Mr Hurn is also an elected member of the Head Teacher Board for the RSC of the North and has been since 2014. He is also a member of Ascent Special Schools Trust prior to which he served as Chair of The Ascent Special Schools Trust and also as Board member at Gateshead FE College for five years until December 2019. He is also a founder member and Chairman of Education Mutual, (a schools’ staff absence cover service) and School’s Mutual Services (a recruitment and staff supply service).
Mr Hurn formed these companies in order to provide a better service for schools in these areas, but more importantly to keep public funds in the education system. He was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to education
