Former education secretary Damian Hinds has been appointed a Department for Education minister of state, No 10 has confirmed this evening.
Mr Hinds’ appointment comes amid a wider reshuffle triggered by the sacking of home secretary Suella Braverman this morning.
Earlier today, longstanding schools minister Nick Gibb resigned, saying he planned to take up a diplomatic role.
Mr Hinds, whose exact portfolio has not yet been confirmed, ended his previous spell at the DfE in July 2019 as part of a reshuffle by then prime minister Boris Johnson.
Having replaced Justine Greening as education secretary in January 2018, Mr Hinds’ time in post was not marked by any major reforms, although the 2019 Teacher Recruitment and Retention Strategy was published under his watch.
He also slimmed down the school accountability system - scrapping the floor and coasting standards - and promoted character education and edtech.
The former grammar school pupil has served as prisons minister since October 2022.
