A former humanities teacher who wants the government to scrap the ban on new grammar schools has been named as a Department for Education minister.
The MP for Stoke-on-Trent North joins fellow ministers Kelly Tolhurst and Andrea Jenkyns at the department, led by Kit Malthouse as education secretary.
Mr Gullis has previously spoken to Tes about the pressures of teaching and how, as an NQT, he broke down in front of pupils.
He described his teaching persona as “a mixture of Boris with the charisma, and Jacob Rees-Mogg - a stiff-upper-lip British type with a no-nonsense approach to expectations”.
More recently, the independent school-educated MP has spoken strongly in favour of allowing more grammar schools to open.
He has also criticised “woke” teachers and called for Ofsted to be allowed to inspect multi-academy trusts (MATs).
He served on the Commons Education Select Committee until last September when he was made parliamentary private secretary to the secretary of state for Northern Ireland.
He resigned from this role in the wake of the Chris Pincher scandal in July of this year.
Mr Gullis’ portfolio at the DfE has not yet been confirmed.
